Nottingham Rowing Club coaches Nicola Benavente, Dez Atkins and Martin Kay took 11 athletes, all  of whom had passed stringent tests over 2,000m and 5,000m on the Concept 2 Indoor Rower, to  the final winter trial on the 5,000m course on the River Witham in Boston, Lincolnshire. They were looking for places in Rowing Team GB in the Olympic Group for Rio, the GB Under-23 Squad and the GB Universities Team. They returned with sound, encouraging results.

On a cold, grey winter's day, in a field of 54, NRC alumnus Rowan Law was 5th, George Halliwell 11th, Jonathan Stimpson 14th, Ayrton Carlton 18th and Joshua Tolley 23rd.

In the Lightweight Men, Harvey Kay (Rushcliffe School) was 18th out of 30, and 4th in the under-20 group.

The Women too achieved satisfactory results. Caitlin Boyland was 10th, and at the 2,500m point was lying 3rd, Katie Bartlett came 11th and was the 3rd U23 home, putting her in a very strong position for a team place. Kirstie Maxfield placed 31st, Samantha Dartnall 36th and Rosie Wilkins 37th. There were 44 competitors in the group. Kat Aguilar-Agon was 11th in the Women's lightweight race.

The next trial is in early April at Caversham near Reading. It will be by invitation only and involve time trials and side by side racing over 2,000m. Nottingham Rowing Club coaches and athletes await the invitations.
