On Saturday 23rd August a small group of veterans from Nottingham Rowing Club competed at Gloucester Masters’ and Juniors’ Regatta. Held on the wide Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, this is very much a friendly and traditional summer regatta. Conditions on the day were dry and largely sunny, with heavy showers seen skirting Gloucester.

Rowing in a combined D/E event, the composite masters’ E  eight of Chris Beesley, Paul Johns, Derek Crowley, Paul Trinick (N&URC), Iain Hill, Shane MacSweeney, Mike Walker and Paul Williamson, coxed by Carole Dickinson had a three second start on Maidstone Invicta RC, but rowed away from them to take the win. This was a good result as the Maidstone crew contained seven of their D eight from Henley Masters Regatta; it was also Paul Trinick’s first win since returning to competitive rowing this summer.

In the masters’ C/D coxed fours, the D crew of Iain Hill, Shane MacSweeney, Mike Walker and Paul Williamson, coxed by Carole Dickinson, defeated C crews from Gloucester RC and Monmouth RC to win the event. The masters’ E crew of Chris Beesley, Paul Trinick, Derek Crowley and Paul Johns, coxed by Carole Dickinson, defeated Gloucester RC but narrowly lost out in the final to Hereford RC.
