Jenny Huskinson, Nottingham Rowing Club's Learn to Row Coordinator, reports that the school holiday Junior Sculling School courses have been a great success.

Coaches Ashley Hewitt, Jonny Richardson and Connor Gamble have dealt with over 30 youngsters anxious to follow in the footsteps of World Champion rowers Helen Glover and Polly Swann.

Over a five week period, boys and girls from Toot Hill, Rushcliffe, Southwell Minster, Fernwood, Nottingham Boys' and Girls' High Schools, Trent College, Loughborough Grammar, The Becket School, South Notts Academy and even a school in Chesterfield ventured out on the River Trent.

One parent wrote: 'My son absolutely loved Learn to Row and was totally addicted by the end of the course. He wasn't deterred despite being surrounded by lots of older girls and only being 12. He would love to progress further. Please pass on thanks to all coaches who provided first class coaching and a fun filled environment. He was very proud of his blisters and compared his hands with his sister's, who rows with the Nottingham Rowing Club junior squad.'

Efforts are now going ahead to integrate the newcommers into the routine training programmes for junior rowers. Nottingham Rowing Club benefits from a large indoor training centre funded from Sport England 'Inspired Facilities'and Rushcliffe Borough Council's 'Local Sports Club Support Fund' - so even in very bad weather training continues.
