Local artist and club member Arthur Spooner (1873-1962) painted the picture above in 1926 to commemorate the founding of Nottingham Boat Club and the start of Sunday rowing in 1894. For many years the painting hung in the clubhouse, where it was on the receiving end of some 'robust' treatment on occasion. In the mid-eighties it was realised that the painting could be worth something, and it was eventually sold at auction in London on 6th March 1986 for a (then) world-record price for work by the artist.
