GOLD AND BRONZE FOR NOTTINGHAM ROWING CLUB'S LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS AT 'BUCS'

On April 29th,30th and May 1st the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sports ) Rowing Regatta took place at the National Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepont.There were over 2,000 students representing 73 Universities in 1,166 boats.Conditions were difficult and wind caused the programme to be altered and some races were cancelled.

Nottingham Rowing Club athletes in Loughborough University colours won one gold and two bronze medals.Club coaches Dez Atkins,Nikki Spencer and Martin Kay were on hand feeding in tactical advice for racing in the rough water.

Katie Bartlett and Caitlin Boyland won gold in the Women's Championship Double Sculls beating Manchester and London Universities.Caitlin had earlier won a bronze medal in the Women's Championship single sculls behind St Mary's and Oxford. Dez felt that all the Nottingham Rowing Club girls had sculled well over the week-end and were well set for the racing season.

The Men's Championship Quadruple Scull of Alex Evangelidis,Max Hearndon,Josh Tolley and Alex Watkins took the bronze behind Regatta Victor Ludorum winners Newcastle University and Durham.Said Martin Kay "They came from fifth with a hard fought burn in the last 250m to squeeze the bronze having stuck to the agreed race plan."
