Walton Small Boats Head of the River for pairs, doubles and single sculls was rowed on a 3000m stretch of the River Thames from d'Oyly Carte Island to Miskin's Warf near Walton Clubhouse, on Saturday December 12th. This is a high quality event attracting juniors from schools and clubs from the London area.

The event was due to have been run in four divisions, with a weather forecast of passing light rain and an increasing southwest wind. By early afternoon, however, conditions had deteriorated to the point that the Race Committee felt obliged to cancel divisions three and four due to unexpectedly stiff winds blowing down the finishing straight, creating rough conditions.

Nottingham Rowing Club sent a small group to the race, and Charlotte Brown continued her run of form last seen at the recent Nottingham Small Boats Head by winning WJ17 single sculls. She was the second fastest junior girl overall, beaten only by a GB Triallist. Priya Jenkins placed second in the WJ18 singles event and Bella Barlow was also second in the WJ16 singles. Charlotte's victory brings the total number of winter wins by the Club to 16.

On the following day, a Head race due to be held on the River Derwent at Derby was called off due to rising water levels. This season has now seen several well established rowing events be cancelled owing to floods or high winds creating dangerous conditions for crews.
