Walton Small Boats Head of the River for pairs, doubles and single sculls is held on a 3,000m stretch of the River Thames from d'Oyly Cart Island to Miskins Warf near Walton Clubhouse. The Environment Agency had issued a 'yellow' warning on the state of the river but added that water levels were dropping.

Nottingham Rowing Club, in search of stern competition, were there in force with coaches Martin Kay, Declan Gamble and Ashley Hewitt.

The Walton Head, a time trial, is rowed in four divisions giving competitors chance to race more than once. Nottingham Rowing Club's in-form sculler Katie Swales from South Notts Academy sculling in her new boat, took up the challenge and returned with two pots. She won Women's J17 Sculls and Women's Intermediate 2 Sculls. Her compatriot Charlotte Brown (Nottingham Girls High School ) was second in the Intermediate 2. Bella Barlow was 2nd in the WJ15 event and 4th in Women's novices.

For the boys it was a story of 'near misses'. Rowan Law was 2nd to a Wallingford sculler by 1 second and 4th in Intermediate 1 Sculls - but he did beat several Elite scullers. Jack Smith (Toot Hill School, Bingham) was 3rd and 5th in the same races. Harvey Kay (Rushcliffe School) was 2nd in the J17 event behind a Walton Sculler and 4th in Intermediate 3 sculls.
