Former Junior Members of Nottingham Rowing Club spread their wings with their University Clubs at Holme Pierrepont this weekend, to win Gold at the British University Combined Sports (BUCS) Regatta. This is reportedly the largest event of its type in Europe, and success here is highly regarded at all UK Universities.

Hannah Harrison, 20, and Lucy Mason, 19, won a fine Gold Medal with two fellow students, rowing for Oxford Brookes University, in Intermediate Quad Sculls, out-powering London, Southampton and Durham in the process.  Hannah stroked the crew in a confident rhythm backed up by Lucy, bringing them through the field from behind with a mature unflustered race plan, to take the trophy by over a length, to deafening cheers from the large OB team and supporters on the bank.

Katie Bartlett, 20, racing in Loughborough University colours, led a tough field over the line by 2 lengths in the Championship Single Sculls final on a day with steady headwind. Lying fourth after 500M, she used her soundly constructed race plan to hold form, to work through into the lead by the final 500M to go. Finishing off with a blistering drive down the 100M red buoys gave her a further length, a plan inherited from Junior days here with her coach, Julie Edwards.

Both these results confirm the quality of the athletes’ upbringing and training at Nottingham, and credit goes to the Coaches and the Club for the committed support given to them in the Junior Squad since the age of 14.
