Welcome to the wonderful world of rowing

Is it for me?

Have you been inspired by the amazing rowing perfromances in Rio?  But not sure if it's for you?  Then why not come along to our open day  on 3rd September between 1pm and 6pm.  For more details and to book a place contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You've decided to take the plunge

So you’ve decided you’d like to have a go at rowing. Well we might be a little bit biased but we think you’ve made a fantastic decision. Rowing is a great activity – whether you are looking to get fit, compete or simply enjoy messing about on the water.   Whatever your shape, size or age it has something to offer everyone – you don’t have to be a 6 foot athlete to take to the water. And you don’t need to buy lots of new equipment before you start – it’s all provided.

Learn to Row (or sculling school)

First stop is a Learn to Row course – and Nottingham Rowing Club runs courses for adults (over 16’s) throughout the year. The courses involve a 2 hour coached session once a week (currently Sundays 12-2pm) for 10 weeks – with a combination of water sessions and land based activity in our new gym.

We teach all beginners how to scull - this is rowing with 2 oars one in each hand (think Katherine Grainger at the Rio Olympics) rather than sweep oar rowing with just one oar (like the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race)

Over the course you will learn all about handling boats and how to row safely on the Trent both on your own and in crew boats. We will start you off in recreational boats which are very stable and help you to develop your technique then as your confidence grows you will have the chance to try ‘fine’ boats which are narrower and faster. At the end of the course our aim is that all participants are able to row safely and with confidence.

While the sessions are planned the coaches will develop each participant at their own rate, so you won’t be rushed or asked to do anything you are uncomfortable with.

Outside of the set sessions you are able to use the club’s facilities outside of peak times and we run an indoor gym session on Friday evenings at 6pm which provides you with a chance to improve your fitness and ergo (rowing machine technique) which really helps with water sessions.

Sculling School (10 Session) courses  cost £150.00.  You will be asked to fill in a Learn to Row form.

What comes next?

After completing a Learn to Row course you may wish to join the club as either a competitive or recreational rower - the options depend on your competence and whether you want to train to race or simply continue to row for general fitness and the pleasure of getting out on the water.

There is an Improvers' Group, this also runs on Sundays, from 2pm—4pm. The same coaching team will supervise, giving the opportunity to get some practise and the aim being to get participants to a level where they are competent and confident to arrange your own outings with others from the club, if you want to.

Participants wanting to race will need to reach a minimum standard and fitness level in order to join one of the racing squads.

Day time recreational rowing - Nottingham Explorers Group. For those looking to row recreationally during the week the explorers group is a chance to meet, row and socialise with like minded people who meet on Tuesdays & Fridays, 12.00—2.00pm. The group not only rows on the Trent but arranges tours both in the UK and further afield.
