Rowers from around the country with aspirations of rowing for Team GB at Senior, U23, Lightweight, University or European level converged on a wintry Boston over the weekend to row over 5000m of the River Witham to stake their claim for 2013 places.

A good indication of the high standard of competition was that the coxless pairs event was won by Molesey Rowing Club with Olympic gold medallist Andrew Triggs-Hodge at stroke and bronze medallist Mohamed Sbihi at bow. Alan Campell, bronze medal winner at Dorney, won the single sculls.

Nottingham Rowing Club members past and present figured well in the results. In the men’s pairs, former Nottingham RC oarsman and Henley medal winner Matt Gotrel came 7th out of 20. Matt now rows at Leander.

In the men’s Lightweight Sculls, out of a large field of 52, Alex Evangelidis finished 34th and Ed Fisher in 42nd. Ed is only 18 and finished 10th in the unofficial U20 category, and 23rd in U23. Nottingham Autumn Head winner Stuart Sykes, rowing for Nottingham University Boat Club, was 22nd.

In the Women’s single sculls with 45 competitors, three ex-Nottingham RC girls now rowing at Leander, Vicky Meyer-Laker, Tina Stiller and Monica Relph, came 4th, 6th and 13th respectively. Of the current group at Nottingham, Laura Wheeler was 17thKatie Bartlett 24th, Sarah Bonar 39th and Beth Lloyd 40th. Katie actually finished 2nd overall in U20 and 5th in U23.

Further Senior trials will be held at Caversham near Reading in April but these are by invitation only based on performance so far.

Nottingham’s junior scullers are due for similar trials later in the month.
