Ten senior athletes from Nottingham Rowing Club were unable to compete last weekend in the rowing trials due to be held on Dorney Lake, due to freezing conditions.

This weekend, seven junior rowers, their coaches and parents, went to Boston in Lincolnshire to row on the River Witham over 5000 m. Saturday's event was in single sculls and Sunday's in doubles. Before the water trial all scullers had posted 5000m indoor rowing scores; the cutoff time for J18 Women was 20m 10s, for J16 Men it was 18m 20s and for J16 Women 20m 40s.

The triallists were: Katie Bartlett (Trinity School, Aspley), Mary Wilson (Nottingham Girls’ High Sch), Olivia Duckworth (Fernwood School, Wollaton), Olivia Kay (Rushcliffe School, West Bridgford), Dominic Parnell (Grove School, Balderton), Connor Gamble (Dayncourt School Radcliffe-on-Trent) and Rowan Law (West Bridgford School). Katie is coached by World Class Start coach Julie Edwards, while the others are coached by Andy Ivory and Junior Co-ordinator Claire Parnell

In very breezy conditions Katie was second, just behind Lucy Burgess from Northwich Rowing Club in the singles. The two then combined and recorded the best percentage of gold medal times for the trial - putting Katie well on track for team GB later in the year. Olivia Duckworth was 13th and Mary Wilson 23rd in a field of 65. Olivia Kay was the fastest of 27 WJ16 scullers and was only 25 seconds behind Katie despite being only 15.

The boys did very well too with Rowan Law coming 4th, Dominic Parnell 15th and Connor Gamble 17th out of 25 in this division.

On Sunday the girls rowed in double sculls: Katie Bartlett was in the winning crew, Olivia Duckworth with her Wallingford colleague came 6th and Mary Wilson and Livy Kay came 7th. Claire Parnell felt that this was an outstanding result of which the Club should be very proud.

The next set of Junior trials for invited athletes will be on Dorney Lake in April.

Next Sunday (26th January) is the annual Head of the Trent and races will take place throughout Sunday, starting at Clifton Bridge. The divisions at 10 am and 2.30 pm proceed downstream past the Forest ground to finish at the TS Orion, while the division at 12.15 pm finishes just above Trent Bridge.
