Stern test for Nottingham Rowing Club

Nottingham Rowing Club athletes attended the second trial over a 5000m stretch of the wintery River Witham at Boston, Lincolnshire, in search of places in Team GB for the Olympic, U23, European and World Úniversity rowing events. The races included returning Olympic and World Champions and was covered live on Sky News.

In the men’s event, won by Alan Campbell from Tideway Scullers,with 58 entries Matt Gotrel came 50th, Chris Baker 52nd and Rob Milligan 55th.

In the women’s race, won by Anna Watkins with Katherine Grainger third, Fiona Bassett came 37th in a field of 44. Several ex-Nottingham Rowing Club women, now rowing for Leander Club, were in this event. Tina Stiller was 10th, Vicky Meyer-Laker 13th and  Monica Relph 19th.

Four Nottingham lightweight scullers competed in a field of 56. Ed Mace was first home and came 25th, Stuart Sykes was 27th, George Caines 34th and Richard Watton 41st.

17 women competed in the Lightweight event; Nikki Spencer was 9th and Yasmin Marks 15th.

The third trial will be held in February over 2000m on Dorney Lake, the site of the 2012 Olympic Regatta.
