Nottingham Rowing Club’s Junior Squad, with their coaches Claire Parnell, Andy Ivory and Martin Kay went down to Henley to compete in the Henley Sculls on Saturday November 12th. The event was held in mild Autumn conditions and attracted 500 entries from clubs and the major public schools. It was raced over 3,000m upstream and covered all of the Henley Royal Regatta course, finishing in the same place as that prestigious event.

Nottingham Rowing Club won four of the eight events entered, and top five places in a further three. The J16 double scull of Connor Gamble from Dayncourt School, Radcliffe-on-Trent and Dominic Parnell from Grove School Balderton won their event by 7 seconds out of a draw of 8 crews. Rowan Law, a pupil at West Bridgford School, took the J15 singles title in a draw of 22 crews. Olivia Kay from Rushcliffe School won WJ15 sculls out of a draw of 25 crews and Olivia Duckworth, Fernwood School Wollaton, was the WJ16 winner in a draw of 18.

Mary Wilson from Nottingham High School for Girls teamed up with Olivia Duckworth rowing up two years and came a very good second out of eight in the WJ18 doubles; Mary was back racing after a year off with injury. A sign of the strength in depth of the junior squad was that Lucy Mason and Sarah Padbury came third in the same race. Dominic Parnell finished 4th out of 21 and Harvey Kay came 5th out of 11.

The club winter total is now 22 chasing the record of 58 set in the 2009/10 season. Crews are now in training for events at York, Hampton, Newark and Boston. At the same time some athletes are preparing for Team GB trials.
