While the winning crews at Nottingham Autumn Head will have a good reason to remember the race (not least for the beautiful October weather), two of the Nottingham Rowing Club Women’s Novice Quad have a particular reason, as it was their first ever win.

The crew of Meryl Harrison, Hettie Thomas, Sarah Royles and Ruth Kemp won out of a competitive field of four, beating second placed St Peters School from York by eight seconds. The women’s novice squad is coached by Nicky Ranoe, who followed the crew from the bank during the race. For Meryl, at stroke, and Ruth, at bow, it was their first win. Sarah Royles, who had also raced in a single in the first division, was a last minute substitute due to illness.
