A small team of five juniors, coached by Claire Parnell, competed in their first Head race of the 2012 season at the Wallingford Long Distance Sculls in Oxfordshire on Saturday October 1st. Instead of the expected autumnal weather they found themselves racing in baking hot temperatures which soared into the mid 20s (high 70s); some of the scullers endured nearly three hours on the river waiting to race and came off the water exhausted.
The athletes all performed incredibly well following their summer break and four weeks of winter training:
Anna Thornton competed in her first ever Head race in the WJ15.1x and came 1st out of 21 athletes, winning easily by over 20 seconds.
Olivia Duckworth came 3rd out of 30 in WJ16.1x and 7th in WIM2.1x
The double of Dominic Parnell & Rowan Law came 2nd out of 16 in J16.2x after incurring time penalties. This pair have never raced together before and Rowan raced up a year as he is a J15 and still only 14 years old.
Mary Wilson came 7th out of 21 in WJ18.1x - a good performance after a year of injury
Rowing in singles this time, Dominic Parnell and Rowan Law came 5th and 7th respectively out of 19 in J16.1x
